Mooseman 70.3

In 5th grade I wrote a short story called, “The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”.  That pretty much sums up my race at the recent Mooseman 70.3 held in scenic New Hampshire.

My swim was okay and really the best part of my race.  I was able to secure a good draft and swam with the first main group behind the two leaders.  The effort felt comfortable and fluid as I conserved energy.  I exited the water with a large group of seven and we stayed together until the first tricky descent.  With wet roads and cold rain I was on the brakes more than I typically would be in order to keep the rubber on the road.  Mooseman 70.3 offers a challenging course with plenty of steep climbs, fast descents into corners, twists & turns.  I was able to keep a couple athletes in sight throughout the first loop and felt pretty decent.  During the second loop things began to get congested on the narrow roads as I began to catch many of the age groupers on their fist loop.  While my energy levels seemed steady my body was definitely feeling the chill.  Onto the run and I immediately knew it was going to be a struggle.  I felt horrible and seemed to have nothing in my legs.  Things were not feeling too fun at this point, but I managed to encourage others on the course and give props to the guys and gals giving me a solid beat down as I struggled to the line with my worst 70.3 performance.  Huge thanks to the volunteers and race organizers.  They did a superb job all weekend managing the event despite the steady downpour.  One volunteer in particular had me smiling.  She obviously saw I was struggling on the run and bent down and looked me square in the eyes saying, “Keep moving young man.  You’re doing great!”

Recovery is the focus this week then making the final preparation for IMLP in July!

Keep it smooth,

Brad
